About HEIC to JPG Converter

Open a HEIC or HEIF photo from an iPhone and convert it to a JPG that every device, editor and upload form accepts. Set the quality before you download, and see the original and converted file sizes side by side. Conversion runs in your browser, which means the photo is never uploaded — and also that it depends on your browser being able to read HEIC in the first place. See the note below on which browsers can.

What this tool does

  • Converts HEIC and HEIF photos to JPG
  • Quality control, defaulting to 90%
  • Original and converted file sizes shown together
  • Preview of the converted image before download
  • Runs entirely in your browser — the photo is never uploaded

Runs in your browser. This tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you enter or open here is uploaded to our servers.

How to use HEIC to JPG Converter

  1. Use a browser that can read HEIC

Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac decodes HEIC natively. Chrome and Firefox on Windows and Linux generally do not — see the compatibility note below before you start.

  2. Choose your photo

Select a .heic or .heif file. The original and its file size appear once it loads.

  3. Set the quality

90% is the default and keeps the picture visually intact. Drop towards 70% when you need a smaller file and the photo is going to be viewed on screen.

  4. Download the JPG

The converted image downloads as a JPG that works everywhere.

HEIC to JPG Converter examples

Example inputs and the results HEIC to JPG Converter returns
Example Input Result
iPhone photo IMG_4821.HEIC A JPG that opens on Windows, Android and every web upload
Quality traded for size Quality 70% A noticeably smaller JPG, fine for screen use
Maximum fidelity Quality 100% The largest JPG, closest to the HEIC original
Unsupported browser A HEIC file in Chrome on Windows Nothing renders — the browser cannot decode HEIC

HEIC, JPG, and why conversion sometimes fails

Browser support is the whole story

This converter uses your browser's own image decoder. That is what makes it private — nothing is uploaded — and it is also its main limitation: if the browser cannot read HEIC, the tool cannot convert it.

Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac decodes HEIC natively, so conversion works there. Chrome and Firefox on Windows and Linux generally do not, and the photo will simply fail to appear with no useful error. On Windows, installing the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store helps some applications but does not give Chrome or Firefox the ability to decode HEIC in a canvas.

If you are on a device where this does not work, the most reliable route is to change what your iPhone produces in the first place — see below — or use a desktop application that has its own HEIC decoder.

Stop your iPhone producing HEIC at all

If you regularly need JPGs, the simplest permanent fix is on the phone rather than in a converter.

  • Open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are captured as JPEG from then on. (Existing HEIC photos are unaffected.)
  • Or use Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic, which converts photos to JPEG as they are transferred off the device.
  • Or email the photo to yourself — Mail converts HEIC to JPEG when it sends, which is a serviceable one-off workaround.
  • Or AirDrop to a Mac, where Preview can export to JPEG directly.

What HEIC is, and what you give up by converting

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It stores an image encoded with HEVC and typically produces a file around half the size of an equivalent JPEG at similar visual quality. It also supports 16-bit colour, transparency, and multiple images in one file — which is how Live Photos and depth data are stored.

Converting to JPG buys universal compatibility and loses some of that: JPEG is 8-bit, has no alpha channel, holds one image per file, and the result will usually be a larger file than the HEIC it came from. For a photo you are uploading or sharing, that trade is almost always worth making.

Choosing a quality setting

JPEG quality is a trade between file size and visible artefacts, and the useful range is narrower than the slider suggests.

Practical JPEG quality settings
Quality Result Use for
100% Largest file, no visible loss Archiving, or further editing
90% (default) Visually indistinguishable from the original in normal viewing Almost everything
80% Noticeably smaller; artefacts only visible on close inspection Web pages, email
70% Clear saving; softness appears in fine detail and gradients Thumbnails, previews
Below 60% Visible blocking in skies and flat areas Rarely worth it

When people use this tool

Uploading to a form that rejects HEIC

Job applications, government portals and older systems frequently accept JPG only.

Sharing photos with Windows or Android users

HEIC needs an extension on Windows and is inconsistently supported on Android.

Putting a photo on a website

Browsers do not display HEIC in an <img> tag; JPG works everywhere.

Opening a photo in older editing software

Many desktop applications predate HEIC and cannot open it at all.

Attaching to a document

Word processors and PDF tools generally expect JPG or PNG.

Printing at a print shop

Many print services still accept JPG only.
